How can I help?

The questions people ask most, with short answers. Pick one to open it.
How do I install PixelDJ?

The Windows version isn't out yet. It's being tested now, and the download page will have it, with the steps, as soon as it's ready.

How do I connect my Bluetooth speaker?

Pair it with your laptop in Windows first, then pick it in PixelDJ.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth. On your laptop, press the Windows key, type Bluetooth and open Bluetooth and other devices settings. Switch Bluetooth on.
  2. Pair your speaker in Windows. Turn the speaker on and hold its Bluetooth button until its light flashes. In the same settings, choose Add device (Add Bluetooth or other device on Windows 10), then Bluetooth, then your speaker. Wait until Windows says it's connected. You only do this once.
  3. Pick it in PixelDJ. Open the Speaker list at the top of PixelDJ and choose your speaker. Not in the list? Choose Connect a Bluetooth speaker there and press Connect next to it.

Next time, turn the speaker on and pick it in PixelDJ.

How do I add music?

Click Load My Music, or My Music along the bottom, then Add Music. Find Music on This Computer looks through your Music folder. Add a Folder and Add Songs let you pick them yourself. You can also drag songs or whole folders onto PixelDJ.

PixelDJ plays MP3, WAV and FLAC files. Songs can be up to 20 minutes long.

How do I use the keyboard?

Your left hand plays Deck A with Q, W, E, A, S, D and T. Your right hand plays Deck B with I, O, P, J, K, L and U. The arrow keys move the crossfader, and the number keys play the pads.

Press F1 in PixelDJ to see every key. There's a full list on the keyboard controls page too.

Does it work with my keyboard layout?

Yes. The number keys play the pads and Retro FX on any layout, even French AZERTY, where they type other marks.

Letter keys go by the letter printed on them, so on a French keyboard Q is still the key marked Q. On a keyboard with another alphabet, like Russian, each key does what the English letter on it would.

How do I mix two songs?

Press Start First Mix the first time you open PixelDJ. It puts two practice songs on the decks and shows you each step on the real console.

Press Q to start Deck A, P to match Deck B to its beat, and I to start Deck B. Then hold the right arrow to slide the crossfader over to Deck B. Read more on how it works.

How do I record?

Press F9, or click Record at the top, and press it again to stop. It records the music and your mic together, and M mutes your mic if you'd rather it didn't. Your mix is saved in your Music folder, in PixelDJ Recordings.

Then pick High Quality WAV to keep every detail, or Easy to Share M4A for a much smaller file that plays almost anywhere. If your laptop shuts down mid recording, PixelDJ offers you what it got the next time it opens.

How do I create a drum loop?

Press F2 and the number keys play the drum kit. Pick one of the six starter beats above the pads and press F4 to play it under your song.

To make your own, press F3 and play the drums. The beat repeats on its own. Press ] to switch to the next instrument, like 808 Slide or Electric Guitar, and [ to go back, and play notes and chords into it too. Press F5 to add more on top, F6 to make it one, two or four bars long, and Save to keep it.

Why is my speaker delayed?

Bluetooth speakers play everything about a fifth of a second late. That's Bluetooth itself, and no app can take it away. PixelDJ tells you once when you pick one.

Songs still sound right. Pads and drums can feel a little late, though. For tight timing, use your laptop's own speakers or a speaker with a cable.

What happens if my laptop goes to sleep?

PixelDJ keeps your laptop awake while the music plays or your mix records. If it sleeps anyway, the music pauses right where it was.

When it wakes up, the next key you press brings your speaker back and does what you pressed. If the speaker itself turned off, turn it back on, or pick another at the top of PixelDJ.

How do I change my keyboard controls?

You can give any of the ten Retro FX another key. Right-click its button, then press the key you want. The other keys stay as they are for now.

Can I use Spotify or Apple Music?

No. Music in streaming apps is protected and only plays inside those apps, so PixelDJ can't open it, and won't try to get around that.

PixelDJ plays MP3, WAV and FLAC files that are on your computer.

How much is PixelDJ?

Try it free for 14 days, with no credit card. Then it's $4.99/month or $19.99/year. Both are the entire app, and so is the trial.

Nothing is charged when the trial ends. The pricing page has the rest.

What happens when my trial ends?

A song that's playing plays on, and pausing still works. Starting something new asks if you'd like to keep PixelDJ. Your music, recordings and beats all stay on your computer either way.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In PixelDJ, press PIXELDJ ACTIVE at the top, then Manage Subscription. It's online, any time, with no need to contact anyone. Without PixelDJ to hand, see your subscription.

PixelDJ keeps working until the end of the month or year you've paid for.

How do I install PixelDJ on Mac OS?

You can't yet. There's no Mac OS version. It's planned, and the download page will have it once it's ready and tested. The Windows version won't run on a Mac.
